imovie

I used imovie for this project and it took me quite a while to figure out the audio portion. Uploading pictures and doing voice over were actually very easy. One of the problems I encountered was trying to publish this video on youtube; even though I purchased this music, it was still considered copy right infringement, the solution was to put it directly into my blog. I start the video with a quick overview of some slides from the thirties. I added some music to make the effect a little more realistic. In terms of education I thought using imovie would be a cool way to get students exited about history. It would be great to publish short videos to the class website with of some of the periods of history you as a teacher are going to cover. With slides available on the Internet and music available from itunes, it becomes a relatively easy process, I warn you that it is time consuming. I learned to use imovie mostly from tutorials made my preteens on youtube. One of the other issues with imovie is that the versions become outdated quickly so you can't get the new features from imovie 09 if you are currently using 08 ect. The other down fall is that it is not feasible for students as most students and schools do not have Mac's, though I know there is a similar version of imovie on PCs. Imovie is a lot of fun for personal use as well. I added some fun family photos on the end of movie as well as some icons from my past. If you get the chance to use imovie I would encourage you to think about using it in the classroom, as I think students would really benefit from it.

Analyzing student data in spreadsheet

This graph showing data from tests 6-10 shows students progress over the testing period. From this data you can see that students improved, some of the scores were more dramatic than others. Katherine did go back down at one point on test 8, but then she steadily began to improve again. Teachers could use this tool to analyze student trends from year to year. Teachers can use this to show a student how they have improved.

Skype

I have been using skype for the last month and having lots of fun. I use it to talk to my daughter who is in Ecuador it's great because she can talk to her sisters and I at the same time. I use it to talk to my neighbors, which seems a bit ridiculous but we love it. In the classroom I think this would be a great tool to use. I could incorporate this into a social studies lesson. I would post a blog online most likely a public teaching site, asking other teachers to use this tool with me. Together we would set up a day and time for students to skype each other. This would be great because students could learn about a different part of the U.S. I along with the other teacher would incorporate a series of questions into the skype assignment. Questions that had to do with geography, demographics, and other characteristics of the location. We could also learn about the other states local history as well as their what they are known for in their contribution to U. S. history. There are several learning possibilities using skype in the classroom.

Wordle

Wordle or word clouds are a fun and creative way for students to participate. As a history teacher I have thought of several ways to use Wordle in class. One way would be for students to come up with terms for a word cloud that will be used on an exam. If we are working with a major historic event like WWII students could make a wordle to help them remember the terms, themes or major ideas behind this event. I like the use of Wordle for a brainstorming tool for students to use. I like Wordle because it can be used in group projects, as a whole class or on an individual basis. I feel that word clouds offer students the ability to be creative while at the same time learn major concepts in the curriculum.

Tokbox

Tokbox is one of my favorite web 2.0 tools. It has great potential in the classroom. If a student has a question they can ask me via tokbox and I can reply in person over tokbox. If I have a class web site students can do short presentations in groups or alone then post them to the web site using tokbox. I can create a video that includes assignments or potential changes to assignments and post them online. If a student is absent I can send a tokbox video message that will include that days assignment. If students need to collaborate on a project tokbox is an excellent resource as they can use visual images from home.

WEB 2.0

Web 2.0 is a wide variety of web based tools that allow users to do a multitude of tasks online that were not available until recently. The world of communication is changing as we are entering a new era in which social networking sites are a major form of communication. Tools such as Skype and Tokbox make visual communication a reality. I think the most important thing about web 2.0 is that it allows users to collaborate on projects. With applications like google docs people can come together online and create something unique that each of these people can edit. Whats even better is that the people who are collaborating on a project whether it's a presentation for work or school a web site or just a basic document, do not have to even physically meet. Web 2.0 allows users the ability to access this web information from anywhere that has the internet.

OTEN conference

These are my reflections on the OTEN conference. I attended two sessions the first on social networking and digital citizenship in the elementary classroom which was very interesting. The second session was on how to help students learn to use online research tools. I was amazed at the amount of information I took away from the conference and I was glad that I took time out of my busy schedule to attend.

Blogging in the classroom

I feel that blogging is a great way to incorporate technology into the classroom. One example I propose would be to create a history unit that explores the history of technology. The object would be to divide students into groups of two or three that examined technological advances. For example, the impact that radio, cell phone and of course the internet had on society. They would then post their findings on a group blog. There next blog would be there speculations on what life would be like with out these advances. Another example would be how these advances affect students in their daily lives ie how often do they use these technological advances. This unit could involves several blogging posts two per week for a start. I feel that the history of technology is fascinating and often over looked. It has a very large impact on our lives and we often take in for granted.

About me

My name is Beth and I am currently in the Aspire part time program. I am a single mother and have three daughters ages 16, 12, and 8. There names are Daphne, Emma and Margaret. My oldest daughter Daphne is currently studying abroad in Ecuador. I come from a large family and I am the youngest of 8. I will be the first of my brothers and sisters to obtain a masters degree which is very motivating as it seems I have been in school for a long time. I graduated from Willamette last spring with a B. A. in history and prior to that I was a student at Chemeketa. I want to teach U.S. history at the high school level and I am also considering teaching mid high as well.
I have few hobbies as I am very busy. I like to read and am re reading some old Charles Bukowski books in my free time. I am a movie junkie and a music fanatic. My social life revolves around friends and family. I love to cook for people and throw many a diner party for friends and family.I work part-time as a swimming and aerobics instructor which I really enjoy. I do a lot of volunteer work in the local high school and elementary schools that my daughters attend. I am very busy but enjoy my life and my daughters.I am very excited about this class and I am looking forward to becoming a bit more tech savvy.
